VHF / SRC

Course list at the bottom of the page

On the VHF/SRC Course you will learn the entire curriculum for the “Short Range Certificate” and receive an international SRC certificate upon passing the exam.

On a boat with a VHF/DSC radio (maritime radio), there must be at least one person with a VHF/DSC certificate. It is not a requirement that everyone on board must have a certificate, but it is a good idea that everyone knows how to operate a ship’s radio, and is familiar with emergency procedures and other calls.

Also note that some rental companies require that two people on board have a certificate.

The curriculum includes:

  • VHF telephony
  • VHF telephony with DCS
  • EPIRP (emergency radio beacon)
  • SART (radar transponder)
  • NAVTEX (storm and navigation warnings)

You will learn how to use your radio correctly, including sending and receiving emergency calls (Mayday) and for general traffic to ports, other ships and coastal radio stations.

An SRC certificate is a requirement for operating a VHF radio and is also often a requirement if you are going to rent a boat abroad. You also need an SRC certificate to be issued a call sign and MMSI number for your boat.
